Questions to ask activewear manufacturers

Activewear demands technical fabrics, fit, and performance finishes. Asking the right questions helps you compare manufacturers on MOQ, fabric sourcing, and quality. This guide covers what to ask before you place an order.

MOQ and technical fabrics

  • What is your minimum order quantity per style and per colour? — Activewear MOQs often range from 100–500 pieces per style. Technical fabrics can push minimums higher; ask per-style and per-colour.
  • Do you source technical fabrics (e.g. moisture-wicking, compression, recycled)? — Technical fabric sourcing affects lead time and MOQ. Ask what they stock or can source and whether you can supply your own.
  • Can I combine multiple styles in one order to meet a minimum? — Mixed-style orders can help small brands. Clarify whether they allow this and how they charge (per style vs. total pieces).
  • Do you offer sample runs for new styles? — Sample runs (e.g. 20–50 pieces) help test fit and performance. Ask minimum for sampling and lead time.

Lead times and construction

  • What is your typical lead time from order confirmation to delivery? — Activewear often runs 8–14 weeks. Get a breakdown: fabric, cut, sew, print/finish, pack. Technical fabric lead times can add 2–6 weeks.
  • Do you do flatlock and performance construction (e.g. gussets, reflective)? — Listen for flatlock capability, seam types, and whether they handle reflective or other performance details in-house.
  • How do you handle size grading for performance fit? — Performance fit is often tighter and more consistent. Ask if they grade in-house and whether they have experience with compression or athletic fit.

Quality and compliance

  • What quality checks do you do (e.g. measurements, stitch, durability)? — Listen for measurement reports, seam and stitch checks, and any wash or durability testing. Activewear is worn under stress; quality matters.
  • Do you have OEKO-TEX or other certifications for technical fabrics? — If you need certified performance fabrics, ask what they can source and what documentation they provide.
  • What is your policy on seconds or off-spec goods? — Clarify how they handle pieces that don’t meet spec and who bears the cost of remakes or discounts.
